‘The Dark Knight’: Looking good
I just read that Maggie Gyllenhaal replaced Katie Holmes as Batman’s love interest. This is great news for the film (and me). One of my guy friends found it weird that Batman was prettier than his love interest in Batman Begins. Perhaps, now the playing field is even. Heath Ledger is also confirmed to play the Joker.
I wonder what fancy gadgets will be in the sequel. That Batmobile was pretty sharp. And perhaps, they could get some subtle product placements to help foot the bill. Batman or Rachel could always use some sort of garmin gps watch or nuvi to locate the bad guy. That Joker can be slippery, placing a tracking device on the criminal sounds cool to me.

Where have all the gps commercials gone?
I see tons of commercials, but I haven’t seen very many tv spots for hand held gps units. I’ve heard radio spots for On Star* systems that are built-in features for GM vehicles, but nothing specifically marketed for gps systems. I know they sell tons of these gadgets, but I feel the public has no conception of the difference between a garmin 72 gps and a Magellan model. I certainly don’t. I wonder why they haven’t really attacked the tv market.
At least, GM is trying to raise awareness. They come off sounding like car gps helps you stay safe. Here’s cool one featuring Batman.

‘Alien’ variations
I was up late last nite watching Alien:Resurrection, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. This time Ripley has been cloned so corporate scientists could harvest the alien inside of her chest. So Sigorney Weaver is running around the ship with some sort of psychic link to the nasties. It’s a cool twist. So because Ripley was basically the Alien queen’s mom, a new species of “alien” is born. That was truly freaky since it has almost human-like (yet shiny black) eyes. There was no more need for laying eggs and the whole bursting out the chest bit. She gave birth to a fully formed alien.

Now that takes balls to write.
But not as much as the premise to Alien vs. Predator. Now, those writers were really stretching out the franchise with that one. I kinda get it though. As I watched the movie last night, I realized those aliens are some bad mo-fos. They’d be the perfect match for Predator. I would have happily watched the two monsters duke it out. But then, they had to write in all the stupid characters and action sequences with the humans.
They added all these ridiculous scientific gadgets to explain how the two creatures came in contact. I think I remember at the beginning, they had some people tracking Predator’s spaceship. So the silly humans want to investigate, and they gear up Sanaa Lathan with a gps locator, some variation of a garmin nuvi 660 , to track the weird activity. Oh yeah, and all this is going down in Antartica or some shit. All of this to basically say, aliens and predators are not things you want to be messing about with. I won’t tell you who wins the ultimate battle (it’s kinda both), but it was decently entertaining if you have absolutely no expectations.

Spy Redux
It seems all sorts of remakes are being written everyday. I have a list of movies that I think would be horrible, yet hilarious to remake in modern times.

What about that comedy, Spies Like Us, with Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd. I think it would be relevant to the current events since they get lost in Pakistan & Afghanistan. Instead, they could become actual spies who have useful gadgets like a fancy nuvi 660 and guns to help them out.
In the original, they’re just a bunch of idiots who discover on accident that they are decoys to start WWIII. They bungle up the plans of this Pentagon offshoot and everyone lives happily ever after. A writer could go the black comedy route or straight political satire. It actually could turn out to be good, probably not a box office hit though.

‘Lost’ in thought
For some reason, I’m still committed to watching “Lost” every week. Each time I feel so close to answers..until the last minutes of the episode. Then, I’ve got more questions than I do answers. Look at how long the comment thread is on Pop Candy each week. It’s mind boggling how much offline discussion each episode provokes.
This week’s episode went behind the scenes of what the “Others” are up to on the island. That guy Mikhail has a ton of fancy equipment, so why don’t any of the people have a gps locator on the island? I’m not talking anything fancy, maybe just a pocket pc gps. I don’t think the Others are stashing a crate of Garmin nuvi locators somewhere (or are they?). But if they can get satellite news feeds and post camcorders in all the bunkers, somebody has got to know where the hell this island is.

And who is this Jacob person? I think viewers should demand that we know the answer to that mystery by the end of this season. It’s hard to keep track of all the details. I know some fans even watch each episode twice. Now that’s more than I am willing to commit. I shouldn’t have to do homework to enjoy primetime television. I refuse to do so, and even if you do, there will still be more questions.
