Skin & Sound sells it
The other day I was at the mall, walking past a home theater store, Good Guys I think. And they were blasting “Desperate Housewives”. I’m not into that show, but I’ll watch it from time to time. But this week’s episode was a tad overtop. Teri Hatcher drove her SUV into a lake and James Denton somehow was around shirtless to save her. What the hell, Marc Cherry? It was like some parody of a romance novel cover.

Seriously, I know you have to be unpredictable to get people to tune in. But that was a bit much. One minute, Hatcher’s character Susan is talking to her fiance. Next thing we know, they’re flying into a lake! I know she’s supposed to be a clutz, but sheesh.
Sadly, it did make me wanna see the whole episode. Just to see how they were gonna explain that plot point away. I blame the loud sound system at the mall.

No ‘Vacancy’
What is this film, Vacancy?

It is so overtly ripping off Hitchcock it makes me sick. I do wonder what’s on the other line when you call the promo phone number, 1-888-9-Vacancy. Bet it’s just some spooky voice or the audio from the trailer. I won’t even watch this as a home theater review exercise.
And I hear they might re-do The Birds. Oh hell to the nah. Have you ever watched that flick with home theater audio systems? It’s awesome, especially when the birds start attacking the kids. Don’t ruin my memories Hollywood. We need to revolt against these re-makes. It’s one thing to turn a television show into a movie. It’s another to re-do a movie from a classic director. I think Hitchcock would find it hilarious though. All this fuss with these directors trying to elevate their crap script into some sort of masterpiece. They don’t stand a chance.

HTS Die-Hards
I wonder how many people have home theater systems that use them instead of going to movies. I think people who are really into films are the most enthusiastic for home theaters. They get a sick system installed with stereo receivers coordinating the whole set-up. And I bet 50% of this group buy camcorders and other big ticket electronics. Like persons working in the entertainment industry. But are there people in middle America who just have to have a shiny HD home theater system?
And I wonder what movies or tv shows they watch that make it worth the expense. If I had the money, I would watch action movies from the early nineties like Die Hard or something. Maybe i could hear all the minute details of Willis crawling through the elevator dropping bombs etc on Alan Rickman’s goons. That would make it all worth it. I do have a special appreciation for David Fincher’s Panic Room because I saw it in a home theater setting. You could hear the rumble behind you and everything.

I can’t wait for the fourth installment. Total popcorn action ridiculousness! Too bad Timothy Olyphant plays the villain (not very believable imo).

Healthy Competition
vs.
From imdb.com:
“Online movie renters Netflix saw its shares tumble nearly 10 percent to $21.70 Wednesday after saying that it expects to end up with about 7.3 million subscribers by the end of the year, 13 percent fewer than it had forecast in January. Shares in the company have fallen 26 percent over the past year. Netflix apparently was hit hard by a rival service from Blockbuster that allows customers to receive movies in the mail, then exchange them in Blockbuster stores. Reporting on Netflix’s woes, today’s (Thursday) Los Angeles Times commented that Blockbuster “is finally getting some payback in its battle with rival Netflix”.”
I guess changing its business model really helped good old Blockbuster out. The only thing is BBV still has a crap collection. I love Netflix because they have almost every movie i can think of. Some BBV locations are pretty big, but I went in the other day to look for the newest season of “The Shield” and they didn’t even have the second season! Granted, I do hate waiting on my mail to get another movie, especially if I am watching tv show discs. But y’know, I’m usually too lazy to go to the video store. I know I’m gonna go home at some point. You have to make an effort to go inside a store, plus it’s kinda expensive considering the price of gas.
Either way this story proves that Americans are really giving their rca home theater systems a workout.

‘Fuzz’ Reminder

Don’t forget to get your butt to the theater for Hot Fuzz! I can’t wait for the dvd. My friend Justin is already talking about how awesome it will be to re-watch it on his flat-screen with his new Divinci sound set-up.
The movie is getting tons of press, so I do hope it has a strong opening weekend. It’s funny, plus it has tons of action sequences. Hey if Disturbia could do it, why not these Brits?
