Digital Camcorder Redux

Hip-Hop Angles

I always think of this Busta video for “Put your hands where my eyes can see” when I think music videos with that wide angle lens style. Come to think of it, I think he uses wide-angle shots all the time for his lyric sections. It’s kinda a signature style for him.

Tons of hip-hop video directors use this stylistic technique. It distorts the frame and makes the shot more interesting. For Busta, I think it helps to extenuate his unique delivery which is already very comical.

I wonder if aspiring music video directors implement wide-angles. Anybody can go online to find a wide angle lens or another camcorder accessory sony sells. You can even read up on digital camcorders reviews to find the most inexpensive camera that allows you switch out lenses. Several mid-range priced camcorders allow you this flexibility.

These lenses either have a fixed-focal lenght or a zoom capability. An extreme wide angle is the fisheye lense, which I think is the one used in the video. The lens distorts your sense of perception within the image. It brings other areas of the shot to the foreground. Look at this shot of a cathedral interior for a still image example.
