Shakedown to 1979
I was watching the video for Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979″. That is a cool video. I can’t believe it’s over ten years old. Feels like just yesterday I was in Sam Goody buying this double album.

Anywho, this was like the big break-out video for Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris. Now they’re big shots with the huge success of Little Miss Sunshine. Music Videos are perfect for DV. The digital video quality of the video worked to their advantage. It made the video style seem amateur, which works for the song. Back when life was simple for teenagers, and rolling down a hill in a tire was crazy-fun! I wonder what teens today what capture with their Canon Zr500 cameras and other digital wonders. Maybe we’d see all the worst fears of Dateline ndws pieces: sex, drugs, violence etc. I wonder if that’s how they get some of their footage for their segments by giving some kids a camcorder. Just let them run wild. Or maybe, the video would be a dud. They’d only see a couple of kids goofing off in the convenience store just like in this video for “1979″. No drama, just nostalgic memories of youth now lost.
