Digital Camcorder Redux

The rise of the Vlog

A new trend on the internet for the last 6 or 7 years. To me, it still hasn’t really caught on (and I don’t plan on vlogging anytime soon). I think perhaps this year it might. With the extreme success of YouTube, the time for the vlogosphere might have come. They held the first videoblogging awards this year in San Francisco. It’s definitely on the horizon.

A Vlog is basically just like a blog or a podcast. Instead of writing content, the blogger/writer/vlogger records their segment and posts it on their website. It’s also called videocasting or video podcasting. Some bloggers already incorporate videos onto their sites, so videoblogging isn’t that radical. But some sites do take it very seriously. They invest in a relatively expensive camcorder, such as a panasonic 3 ccd digital camcorder, where they can get a truly great video quality to upload. Rocketboom is (or maybe was) one the most popular vlogs on the internet today.

There are thousands of vlogs today with varying themes and goals. Some of news shows, others do animations, and even more produce original content like comedy shorts. Most vlog sites have their own channel on YouTube. The true definition of a vlog is becoming harder to pin down. It’s changed so much from just using a webcam to using actual video camcorder equipment. There’s so much experimentation and outflow of content on the internet. It’s hard to keep track. I’m sure we’ll be seeing exciting changes to these pioneer videoblogger sites.
