Blindness stars Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Gael Garcia Bernal. A town is overcome with a strange plague (called the Light sickness) that renders the victim blind. They are quarantined and have their rights restricted. Julianne Moore’s character somehow still has her sight and tries to lead them out of their quarantine prison.

This dark sci-fi melodrama is directed by Fernando Meirelles, the director of City of God and The Constant Gardner. I think he is the perfect match to realize Don McKellar’s script. They both question the morality of government and society in their films, especially so in McKellar’s take on the apocalypse in Last Night. They seem to hone in on people’s motivations in intense situation and focus on how things simply play out.

Blindness opens today in major cities.

The Sex and the City DVD comes out on Tuesday, a reminder of how much fun it was to see the reunion of the cast, and revisit the dynamics that Sex and the City is adored for.  However, I was a little taken back by the amount of whining by Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), and the other women in this movie. It proved to be a little annoying after awhile.

Whether you like the movie or not, you’ve gotta give kudos to the marketing geniuses who figured out how to cash in this one while the memory of the tv series was still alive and well.  Nice turnaround!

Is Danny Boyle going for 3 with 28?  According to MTV, there’s some talk about a 28 Weeks Later sequel, which Boyle is dubbing 28 Months Later- at least for now.  Reportedly, he has some ideas for a third film in the series, but he’s shopping them around to see what the consensus is.  Boyle’s not disclosing any further details regarding the plot.

The first film in the series, 28 Days Later, was a surprise hit in 2003, followed by the release of 28 Weeks Later in 2007.

I don’t know if the third time is necessarily a charm here.  While the first was great, the second round of “the infected” wasn’t exactly that infectious for me.  Can this one survive a third spin?

I’m not too sure the LAPD are very happy about the events portrayed in Lakeview Terrace, which hits theaters today, since Samuel L. Jackson plays a crazy cop who has a sinister hands on approach to his neighborhood. Chris (Patrick Wilson) and Lisa Mattson move into their dream house in Lakeview Terrace, everything is kittens and rainbows until they meed their new neighbor, police officer Abel Turner (Samuel L). He doesn’t take too kindly to them being an interracial couple and decides to make their lives a living hell.

Poor Chris and Lisa are probably wishing they checked out they’re neighbors more thoroughly before signing that mortgage agreement…

I get what the movie is going for, a sort modern update of Unlawful Entry or something, where you think you’re safe with a cop but actually you’re far from it. Nevertheless, the tagline just doesn’t do it for me: “What could be safer than living next to a cop?” Um, how bout almost anything if you buy what this movie is selling! I don’t know about you, but I’m a law abiding citizen and I’d still prefer to live far far away from any cop, if I can help it.

Snow Angels is another gem from young director David Gordon Green (The Pineapple Express). The film had a short run in LA/NY in March, so luckily it didn’t take too long for the film to be released on dvd.

The film follows the trials and tribulations of a small East Coast town. Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsdale are estranged high school sweethearts, who are unsure if they’re truly meant to be together. It also stars current indie darling, Olivia Thirlby (The Wackness and Juno) as a teen girl who crushes on a less than interested guy played by Michael Angarano. The film is a meditation on small town life and how tragedy can strike at any moment and change everything and yet not.
