Digital Camcorder Redux

RCA Small Wonder

I’ve heard of these simple, no-frills camcorders made by Aiptek, Flip, and Creative Labs. I guess that forced RCA to step up its digital camcorder game. They’ve created the RCA Small Wonder EZDVD2BD that comes with it’s own dvd burning station!

Am I the only one going, wha? Burning a dvd from your camcorder really isn’t that difficult, all you need is iDVD or Roxio and a firewire cable. But if you can snap a Kodak Easyshare digital camera into a dock and print pictures, then why not be able to burn camcorder footage through a dock. And if this RCA camcorder costs less than $200 bucks, that is an enticing deal for busy families who just want to record a special event and save it on DVD.

Vado Camcorder - A Flip Video Clone?

The folks over at Creative Labs are probably not having such a great week. JR.com last week accidently leaked details on their new compact camcorder series, the Vado. After word got out, the company seemingly scrambled to submit a proper press release and image of the product this week.

Wired noticed the last week that the camcorder appeared out of nowhere on JR. They’re basic review of the product is that it’s merely a clone of the Flip camcorders.

From Wired’s blog:
“It’s a surprise that nobody has done this before. The modest little Flip commands a huge 13% of the entire market, proving the demand for a cheap and cheerful camcorder. We expect that Vado won’t be the first attempt to cut a slice of this cake.”

Can you really blame them for trying to capitalize on the Youtube video phenomenon? Plus, who can argue with the $100 price tag? I’d think these would come in handy when you’re traveling and don’t really care about quality.

Drink Your Milkshake

My favorite film from 2007, There Will Be Blood, arrived on dvd this week. I chuckle to myself at the mere thought of milkshakes and immediately think of Daniel Day Lewis’ engaging performance from the end of the film.

Apparently, the dvd collector’s addition wasn’t up to scuff and Defamer had a few choice words for Mr. Anderson. It’s riddled with cries of disappointment, but I think what they had to say was out of love for PT’s work.

I’m glad I didn’t rush out and pre-order it now. The author of that rant makes it sound like Paramount tried to pawn off a bootleg copy of the movie (like the really bad ones made with a shaky compact camcorder and horrible sound) instead of the real collector’s edition.
