The Map Point

Did you ever see that movie Groove? It stars Hamish Linklater, who now plays Christine’s brother on “The New Adventures of Old Christine” (which isn’t half bad).

The plot is basically worthless…they’re going to a party with a various group of characters. Hamish portrays the inevitable role of the newbie raver (& drug user). My favorite memory of the film though is the two gay guys. They just wanted to find the party for re-live their younger days. But they get all lost at the map point and can’t find the secret party location. Seriously, they almost give up dozens of times. But when they do arrive, they just looked at each other knowingly and decided to party it up. Like all that trouble was worth it. It was pretty funny, but ultimately sounds stupid if you haven’t seen the film or know about how these parties work.

These raves typically had a map-point to deter busts by cops. Promoters making it all convuluted for no good reason. You get there and either it’s the best thing ever (usually because you’re on drugs) or it sucks (i.e. no drugs). What the promoters need to do is get their maps and parties sponsored by Garmin gps. They could plug the new garmin i5 on the poster and claim it’ll shave 20 minutes of random driving off their trip to find the party. Those two guys in the movie coulda plugged in the address and been at the warehouse in no time.

Between that film and Go, the rave scene quickly died. They seem so dated watching these movies today. But in the late 90s, based on those stupid movies, I thought warehouse parties were the jam!
